The City of Moreton Bay has unveiled plans for a major new sporting and recreation hub at James Drysdale Reserve in Bunya, marking a significant investment in the region’s future sports infrastructure and community spaces. The project is part of a long-term master plan designed to support the area’s rapid population growth and increasing demand for quality sport and recreation facilities.
This new flagship precinct will transform the existing reserve into a modern, multi-sport and community hub that will serve local families, sporting clubs, schools, and community groups for generations to come.
The master plan for James Drysdale Reserve has been developed over several years in consultation with local sporting clubs, volunteers, and community organisations. The goal is to ensure the precinct continues to meet the needs of the community now, while also allowing room for future expansion as the surrounding suburbs continue to grow.
The project will be delivered in stages over time, allowing facilities to be upgraded and expanded in a sustainable and planned way. This staged approach ensures the reserve can continue operating while improvements are made and allows the precinct to evolve alongside the community.
The development also forms part of broader planning across the Hills District, ensuring the area has access to modern sporting infrastructure and community spaces as population growth continues across Moreton Bay’s southern suburbs.
The upgraded sporting hub will include a wide range of new and improved facilities designed to support multiple sports and community activities. Planned features include:
These facilities are designed to create a central sporting destination that supports everything from grassroots junior sport through to larger community events and competitions.
Moreton Bay is one of the fastest-growing regions in South East Queensland, and with more people moving into the area each year, the demand for sporting fields, courts, and community recreation spaces continues to rise.
Large sporting hubs like the James Drysdale Reserve upgrade are designed to be intergenerational spaces — places where children play sport, families gather, clubs operate, and the broader community comes together. These types of facilities also play an important role in improving health and wellbeing by encouraging active lifestyles and social connection.
In addition to local benefits, major sporting facilities can also attract regional competitions and events, bringing visitors and economic activity into the area.
