If you've lived around Moreton Bay long enough, you know this peninsula punches well above its weight when it comes to community heart. And this July, Redcliffe is doing it again.
Darren Middleton, the guitarist and songwriter who spent years helping shape the sound of Powderfinger, is set to take the stage at Dolphins Leagues Club on Sunday, 12 July, for the 14th edition of Rockin 4 The Homeless. It's a solo set from one of Australia's most respected rock musicians, and it's happening right here in our backyard.
For those who haven't come across it before, Rockin 4 The Homeless is a volunteer-run music fundraiser that has been a fixture on the Redcliffe calendar for well over a decade. Every single dollar raised on the day goes directly to The Breakfast Club, a local organisation that has been feeding people in need across the Redcliffe area since 2003. We're talking over 1,000 meals delivered every month to people doing it tough.
What makes this event stand out from your average charity gig is that the whole thing runs on goodwill. The volunteers give their time for free, local sponsors cover the running costs, and that means the money from the crowd goes straight where it's needed. No management fees, no production markups. Just community looking after community.
Middleton's involvement is a real boost for the 14th edition. Most Australians know his work from Powderfinger's catalogue, including the band's heavier, grittier era around albums like Vulture Street. But over the past few years, he's been carving out his own path through solo releases and touring with the Australian Rock Collective alongside musicians from bands like Jet and Spiderbait.
His current work is more personal and stripped back, which makes a community stage in Redcliffe feel like a pretty natural fit for where he's at musically right now.
Adding to the star power, Tim Rogers from You Am I has signed on as an official Ambassador for the event. Rogers is one of those Australian rock figures who doesn't need an introduction, and having him lend his name to the cause gives Rockin 4 The Homeless a reach that extends well beyond the peninsula.
Timing-wise, this one lines up beautifully for footy fans too. The Dolphins face the Sharks at Kayo Stadium the Saturday before, on 11 July, so you've got a cracking NRL match one day and a live music fundraiser the next. Not a bad way to spend a winter weekend on Moreton Bay.
For locals, this is the kind of event worth getting around. Redcliffe has always had that community glue that you don't always find in bigger parts of southeast Queensland, and Rockin 4 The Homeless is one of the clearest examples of it. Good music, a genuine cause, and a day out that actually makes a difference to people in the local area.
Keep an eye out for ticket details and updates as July gets closer.
