Comedy Wildlife Photography Exhibition at Redcliffe Museum

If you've ever watched a seagull steal someone's chips and thought, "that should be in a gallery," then this exhibition is very much your kind of arvo out.

The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards exhibition has landed at the Redcliffe Museum, and honestly it's one of the better free things happening in Moreton Bay right now. No bookings, no entry fee, just 60 genuinely funny wildlife photographs that'll have the whole family grinning from ear to ear.

What Is the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards?

Founded in 2015 by wildlife photographer Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards celebrate the lighter side of the animal kingdom while raising awareness of conservation issues. Each year the competition pulls in entries from photographers across the globe, from total beginners pointing their phone at a confused possum to seasoned professionals with expensive glass and too much patience.

The competition celebrates the hilarity of our natural world and helps highlight what needs to be done to protect it. It's a clever idea when you think about it. Rather than guilt-tripping people into caring about wildlife, it makes them laugh first, then think. Works a treat.

What's at the Redcliffe Exhibition?

The exhibition features 60 images showcasing a selection of winners and finalists from the competition over the years, taking visitors on a journey filled with laughter, joy, and a renewed sense of wonder for the animal kingdom.

Think awkward poses, terrible timing, and animals that look like they've just been caught doing something they weren't supposed to. From clumsy lions to mischievous monkeys, the exhibition shows the humour, character and humanity of wildlife in a way that connects us all.

Some of the standout images doing the rounds from recent years include shots of lemurs mid-yoga pose, an eagle getting absolutely harassed by a seagull, and a porcupine fish that looks like it's had a rough day at the dentist. The kind of stuff that makes you stop, look again, and then nudge whoever's next to you.

There's More to It Than Just a Laugh

These photos aren't just funny for the sake of it. The awards use the language of laughter to engage people with the need for wildlife conservation. Every funny face, awkward pose and well-timed snap helps us empathise with the creatures we share our planet with, and reminds us why we need to protect their future.

The competition uses humour to engage audiences with creatures they may never be able to see for themselves, and that the world could lose for good. That's a pretty good reason to pop in on a Wednesday morning.

Practical Info

The exhibition is on at the Redcliffe Museum, 75 Anzac Avenue, Redcliffe. Redcliffe Museum is open Wednesday to Friday 10:00am to 4:00pm, and Saturday to Sunday 10:00am to 3:00pm. Entry is completely free and no bookings are required, making it a dead easy family activity or a quiet solo wander if you need a bit of a break from the world.

It's a good excuse to head down to the Redcliffe foreshore, grab a coffee along the esplanade, and make a proper morning or afternoon of it.

Worth the Trip

The Redcliffe Peninsula is already one of the more underrated spots in Moreton Bay for a day out, with the waterfront, markets on weekends, and a relaxed pace that a lot of the busier suburbs just don't have. Adding a free, world-class photography exhibition to the mix makes it an even easier sell.

Whether you're after something to do with the kids on a school holiday, or just want a bit of a giggle without spending any money, this one ticks the boxes.
